I have been meaning to write a little more in detail about Mason's tennis. I get so much joy watching him play every Saturday. The class he is in is a little advanced for him, but it is bringing out some really good qualities. It could have easily frustrated him and made him not want to play, but he tries so hard and always keeps a really good attitude.
For instance, some times they will actually play out points and have to keep score. They don't keep score like real tennis, that would be way too hard! Seriously - love, 15, 30, 40, deuce, ad in, ad out - no wonder people don't get tennis. They just count "your score" to "their score" so 1 to 0, 2 to 1, and so on. Well, these kids all play three times a week and are at least 1 to 2 years older than Mason. They are much better than he is. However, he never gets frustrated when the score is 0 to 8 or 2 to 10. He just keeps on proudly getting back to the ready position and starts again. Many of the other kids lie or argue about the points because they hate to be losing. I have seen a few tears from others already and this is just practice.
I think one great thing about tennis is learning to lose. There are many sports where you can win game after game, week after week, and might even go a whole season undefeated (usually these are team sports). Not in tennis. In tennis everybody except one player looses every single week. You have to learn how to lose and not let it bring you down. It is all about the match-up and how one players strengths may play perfectly to your weakness.
On the way to the courts this morning he told me, I really hope to play King Court again. I was surprised to hear that, because that game is where you play against "the King of the Court" and only get to advance to the King side until you get two points in a row. He has very rarely ever got to be the King. I asked him why he wants to play that one, and he said "because it is really hard to get to be the King, but then when you do it is so fun to run over there." What a great attitude!
Today they were learning about serving, and he actually excelled at this even better than the other kids. I think it is because he has never once tried to serve before this class, so he doesn't have any bad habits. I think I may have even learned something listening to the instruction. She said that your arm should be the motion of throwing a football high, and I have never heard it taught that way before. I am going to try and see if that gets me some more power. Throwing a football is actually very good cross training for tennis. Most of the other kids were trying to serve like a really high forehand. He was making about 75% of his serves today. He really liked to hear that praise today too. I think Coach Vicki was surprised at how well he was doing, so she kept giving him lots of praise, "Good serve Mason, Nice One, etc." Then every time he served a good one, he turned around and gave me a thumbs up.
Another potential attitude scenario is when Coach Vicki will demonstrate whatever it is that she wants to work on next. All the kids scream, "I want to be the demo!" Mason does too, but he has never been picked to be the demo. You can tell that he is disappointed, but he doesn't let it get him down. He usually watches and listens to the demo even though a lot of the kids check out at that time (re: kid in white hat).
Lastly, his positive attitude towards the other kids is remarkable. I coach him on this every morning driving him to the practice, but it really seems sincere. I tell him that he should be kind to everyone even when they might hit a bad shot. He always says, "good try," or "almost" when they don't make it. I like that. Except...there is one girl that has a nasty attitude, and she brings the worst out in Mason too. She is just one of those kids who make people without kids despise all children. Whenever they are teamed up together Mason yells at her and says, "I wasn't ready", or "you hit it too hard"...It is only with her, so I think it is ok that he is allowed to not like everyone.
I don't have unrealistic goals about his tennis future, but I do know that if you don't set big goals, you will certainly not achieve them. If he continues to keep this great mental attitude and I can afford (with time and money) to keep him in lessons, there is no reason he can't go as far as he wants to with this sport.
(Mason was ON MY NERVES this afternoon, and I was so mad at him, but writing this has made me feel much better. Now I am going to go tuck my bug into bed.)

24 hour trip
This was a fast one, but a MUCH needed break. I went down to Indian Wells to see the finals of the BNP Paribas Open. It is only 4 hours away and all the big name tennis players are there. It is like seeing a grand slam without all the hub-bub. The room was great, and when I woke up to this:
I was stressing a little going by myself because that is out of my comfort zone, but what I realized is that it is becoming very comfortable for me. I like my own company and I had a really good time all by myself. So much so, that I am seriously considering going all week next year. It would be great if a couple people came for a day or two, but nobody can watch as much tennis as me.
I did meet my mom down there, but she was staying all week and we really didn't spend much time together. I got to see Sharapova and Azarenka, and they both played well, but Azarenka is just on fire lately. She doesn't seem to ever make a mistake and beat Sharapova fairly routinely. I loved every minute of watching them play.
Then the men's final was Isner vs. Federer. Of course I was routing for Federer. He looks so graceful when he plays; it is really special.
The drive was insane with all of the rain we had that weekend. It was pretty dangerous actually. I had to take a picture of the famous Palm Springs wind thingys. Then I quickly put my camera down and grabbed the steering wheel even tighter.
It was seriously 8 hours of stressful driving for 4 hours of tennis, but for me, totally worth it.
I knew I would have a good day!

March Happenings
Mason's birthday at Bounce U was a success. I thought it went well. Lots of kids came and everyone seemed to have a good time.
Pictures are really hard to take a Bounce U because the lighting is bad and the kids are fast, but here are a couple:
Alex really had a good time too. I am glad because Bounce U can be our Friday playdate every week.
I had asked for no gifts at the party, because we really don't need 20 $20 gifts. I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but that is just too many. Because I said no gifts, and had mentioned to a couple of people Mason's recent obsession with money, he got lots of money in cards. He ended up with $93! Can you believe it! A couple cards had no dollars in them and he was very upset by those cards. He looked at them as if they were broken.
With his money, we went to Target the next weekend and got him a new scooter.
Then, mom promptly went out and bought him a helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads. He is not the most graceful kid...
Last weekend Mason and I went on a double date with Kristi and Kenny (who did not want his picture taken)
We saw The Lorax, and I really liked it. He acted about the same as his first movie. The first 45 minutes was great, and then he got antsy and needed to bounce around a little.
Today has been a lazy day. I have been watching tennis and the boys are watching Thomas the Train on the ipad.
I am going to Indian Wells tomorrow to watch the finals of the BNP Paribas Open. So excited! So far the draw lined up pretty well for me. As of now, I know the final 4 women are Azarenka, Kerber, Sharapova, and Ivanovic. I am hoping for an Azarenka - Sharapova final. The semis are tonight, so I will know before I leave who will be playing. On the men's side, I am hoping for a Djokovic - Federer final, but won't know until Saturday night. The weather is not looking good though. It is supposed to rain all day tomorrow, so I am not sure how they will get any tennis in. And that means I have to drive in the rain, but oh well. I hope it won't be too bad. Sunday is only a 20% chance of rain right now, but it will be really windy. I am determined to have a good time anyway! I am staying at a really nice hotel, so worst case scenario will be sleeping in really late (I will ensure that with some sleeping pills) bubble bath and room service. Nothing wrong with that!

How Big
Mason's all-time favorite song is called "How Big" by Eric Herman. We saw him at a library concert about 1 year ago, and bought the album. He always wants to repeat track 10 over and over again. I wanted to write the lyrics here for Mason when he is older:
How Big
There's an itty bitty bug who lives on the back of a tiny bug
who lives on the back of little bug
who lives on a hollowed out log
Log lives on the edge of some woods
on the edge of a pond
near the edge of a pond lives a little bug eatin' frog
The itty bitty bug thinks what he sees is everything
he doesn't know that really, he's so really small
What's in his eyes is what he sees
So the itty bitty bug will say,
How big is my world, How big is my life, How big is it all
There's a girl who lives on a planet
that lives near a star, that lives in a galaxy where lives a hundred billion other stars
galaxy lives in a universe with billions of galaxies
and the universe lives where we can't see that far
The girl on the planet thinks what she sees is everything
She doesn't know that really she's so very small
What's in her eyes is what she sees
So the girl on the planet will say,
How big is my world, How big is my life, How big is it all
And the universe might be inside a tiny speck of dust
Big and small both go to the extreme
So whether you're an itty bitty bug or a kid in a galaxy
Your life is always as big as you dream
How big is my life, How big is it all (repeat...)
How big is my world, How big is all (repeat...)
