Pinterest

I am in love with pinterest!  It makes me feel like I am shopping without any of the money spending going on.  There are so many great ideas - almost too many - I can slip into the mommy guilt pretty fast seeing all the things that I could be doing with my kids.  And then there is just the nature photos that I can stare at all day.

Seriously, how can you resist this: http://pinterest.com/pin/24629129181749868/

Oops.  I just spent another 20 minutes on pinterest instead of finishing this post.  Oh well, it's Friday.

We are in full Halloween mode here.  Yesterday was Mason's Fall Festival (vestibal, vestival, bestibul, vegtable) - we have had fun teasing him with this word.  Tonight is the Haunted Harvest at the Springs.  Tomorrow I will be meeting a friend at a pumpkin patch.  Next week is up in the air but I am pretty sure we will find some fun stuff to do.  We will probably just trick or treat around the neighborhood again.  I am curious as to how Alex will react.  My guess is that he won't like it too much.

He has been in quite the mood this past week.  He is a little under the weather and such a grump!  You have to check out this funny video:

Tell me the truth - is it funny enough for America's Funniest Home Videos?  I am quite biased.

Speaking of AFV...Mason and I have made that our little Sunday tradition.  He absolutely loves this show.  I remember watching it as a family when I was younger.  I love it.

What else...Dad and Mason are obsessed with Zombies - along with what seems like the rest of the country.  It drives me crazy.  Here was our latest zombie conversation:
Mason: If I was a zombie would you try to kill me.
Mom: No, baby I could never kill you.
Mason (very sweetly, comes up to stroke my hair): When I am a zombie I promise that I would never eat your brains or your heart.  I would only eat a little bit of your hair.  Because it grows back.
Mom: Thanks, Mason.  That's love.

Ok, I am off to do some chores! Bye.

The Last Lecture

Steve Job, founder of Apple, died this week of pancreatic cancer.  He was truly a genius, an excellent leader and visionary, and had a remarkable backstory.  I didn't know all that much about him previously, but that night I watched his commencement speech for Stanford in 2005, and then heard it on the radio 3 times since that night.  His advice is shockingly similar to how my Steve leads his life.  I became just a little bit more proud of Steve after watching that video.

The person I kept thinking about though, was Randy Pausch.  Randy also died of pancreatic cancer in 2008.  He was a professor at Carnegie Melon and was asked to give "A Last Lecture" for the college.  Ironically, this would actually be his last lecture.  The talk is about living your childhood dreams and was really a way to give his advice to his three small children.  If you do not know his story or have seen the lecture, you really just HAVE to do that now: The Last Lecture

Sure, it's an hour and fifteen minutes, but it is life changing!  He also wrote a book that is also entitled, "The Last Lecture" and I re-read it last night.  I forgot at just how much great advice is in the book.

Some of my favorite parts:

I won the parent lottery - He had a great family life with just amazing parents.  I want to be that kind of parent to my boys more than anything else in this world.  I hope I can succeed.

There are two types of families: Those that need a dictionary to get through dinner and those that don't. - Again, I hope this is the culture that my family will have.

"This is my son.  He's a doctor, but not the kind who helps people." - That is a quote from Randy's mother, and he was using it in a context of valuing not being too boastful.  He said that her job was to not let his head get too big.  I know I do that for Steve all the time (maybe too much).

The Elevator in the Ranch House...If your kids want to paint their bedrooms, as a favor to me, let them do it.  It'll be OK.  Don't worry about the resale value of the house. - Randy painted all kinds of random things on his bedroom wall (the quadratic equation, a rocket ship, an elevator, etc.).  The fact that he was allowed to express his personality on his walls really meant a lot to him, and he loved going back to his childhood room to relive that time in his life.  I think it is so romantic that there would even be a childhood room to go back to.  That is so rare in today's society.  Randy, I promise, I will let my kids paint their walls!  Or whatever, "painting their walls" means to my boys.

When you're screwing up and nobody says anything to you anymore, that means they've given up on you. - I have a personal story here that I will share with my boys in the book that I will make from this blog.

On giving children self-esteem...It's not something you can give; it's something they have to build.  Only one way to teach kids how to develop it: You give them something they can't do, they work hard until they can find they can do it, and you just keep repeating the process. - Brilliant.

The Man in the Convertible - This is a story about someone seeing a man in a convertible, tapping his fingers to the music, just seeming to be loving life in that moment.  She gets a better look at the driver and it was Randy Pausch just days after he had found out that he was dying (3-6 month prognosis).  She knew his situation and was just in awe of the fact that he could be so genuinely happy in the face of that devastating news.  She relayed the story to Randy via email and that is how he found out about it.  It meant a lot to him knowing that his "live like you are dying" attitude was genuine and not just a front to impress people.  I hope that I live a very long life, but Steve and I both make sure that we are living each day to the fullest because you never know just how long you have left.  You have to make sure you are generally happy living your everyday life.  Steve Jobs also had this as one of his key points.

Dream Big - Personally I have never been a big dreamer.  I am more of a realist.  But having kids makes me want them to have big dreams.  I look at Mason and see the endless possibilities that lie ahead for him.  He can change the world.  I can help.  I am sure I will feel that way about Alex too, but he is still too small to show me his personality.

Let's Make a Deal - His story has to do with making a deal with his mom that he would be allowed to lean back in his chair at the table, she would stop nagging, but if the chair ever broke, he would have to replace all the chairs.  Deal.  Steve and I like to make deals instead of compromises too.  When you compromise nobody gets what they want.  When you make a deal, both parties are happy.

The Lost Art of Thank-You Notes - I had to add this one for Steve.  He is the king of thank you notes, and yes, they have gotten him very far.

No Job is Beneath You - I love this one - If you are a ditch-digger, be the best ditch-digger you can be.  That is just great advice.

All You Have To Do Is Ask - This has worked for me professionally like a charm.  I probably don't use it enough in my personal life.  Seriously, it is as simple as asking for what you want, and many times you will get it.  It is amazing to me how many people just don't ask.  It seems as if they would rather complain and make assumptions.

Make a Decision: Tigger or Eeyore - This probably doesn't need explaining right?  You choose to be happy or sad.  I always choose to be happy.  I find it so much easier.

Tennis! (again)

I am in no mood for blogging as this munchkin was on my nerves tonight!!! I seriously need a sound proof room in my house.  However, he had a really good tennis lesson today, and I am thrilled that they are teaching Quick Start tennis.  That is tennis that is scaled down to the little kids' size.  It is half size courts, short nets, low compression balls, and small rackets, so that they can learn correct technique that doesn't really change as they grow - the size of the court and balls just change.  I love this concept.  You can learn more at www.10andundertennis.com

Here are the pictures:

The 30 minute lesson is about half foot drills and ball handling skills, then they move into hitting.  Mason   wanted to hit for a lot longer, so next week I will bring my racket and I will hit with him after the lesson. I think we are both going to enjoy these Saturday lessons a lot!

Tennis!

The Lexus of Las Vegas is in town again.  This is the third year that it has been here and I try to go every day that I can.  I just love seeing the players and their commitments and perseverance.  Tennis is a pretty glamorized sport, but in reality only the top 100 players in the world are making any money.  The travel expenses and coaches take up whatever winnings the lower ranked players ever make.  They really do it for the love of competition and the sport.

This is an ITF tournament, which is one tier below the WTA tour.  It is a $50,000 tournament, which means the winner get $7,000.   That much money for these players pretty much means they can keep playing for another month.  The real prize is the ranking points to hopefully move you high enough to play in the grand slams.  About the top 100 players receive direct entry into the grand slams (128 spots) and the rest are qualifiers and wild cards.  If you can make it in the top 100, even if you lose in the first round of the grand slam you make $19,000!

Maria Sanchez - a senior at USC

Alexa Glatch - ranked 165
The first match yesterday was Alexa Glatch v. Maria Sanchez.  I was rooting for Sanchez because she was the huge under-dog.  I have a soft spot in my heart for the college players.  I just think they have the right career going.  Realistically you are never going to be the very best at the sport, so why not try as hard as you can to get a college scholarship and play 4 years of college tennis.  You get a college degree out of it and 4 unforgettable years.  You can still play at these smaller US tournaments (like here in Vegas) and try your best to get on the pro tour when you are 21 or 22.  Maria Sanchez is ranked 1107 in the world, but after her Quarterfinal loss, she will get 24 ranking points, and move her up to around 700 in the world.   You need about 700 points to reach the top 100 in the world.  Alexa Glatch has been playing pro tennis since she was 14 years old, and still not made it through to the big dogs.  Wouldn't you have rather had a more normal life and have a college degree by now?

Allie Will

Romina Oprandi - Number 1 seed, ranked 92 in the world
This was a great match!!!  I was again rooting for the college player, Allie Will, but Oprandi used her experience and won a tie break and then steam rolled through the second set.  Oprandi plays these lowers tournaments to get some safe points before fighting with the big name girls.  She will probably win the tournament and get another 90 points added to her yearly total.  It is all strategy.  That will keep her secured in the top 100 for another 4 or 5 months.

Then I went over to the 2nd court and watched a doubles match.  Doubles in fun to watch and goes a lot faster than singles.  There are not as much points or money in doubles though.

Then I saw one more singles match against Kulikova and Tatishvili which I didn't have a favorite.  Kulikova won.

Then I got to see Oudin in doubles.  She is an exciting and popular American players, but not really that talented.  She had a great run in the US Open 2 years ago, but never really did anything since then.  Still she was a lot of fun to watch.
And I really like her partner, Lepchenko too.
Well I had a great day and today I get to take my little start to his tennis lesson today.  We will keep doing lessons when the weather is nice and he wants to keep at it.  I will post pictures tomorrow.

Random

I have some time, so I thought I would blog.  It's been a while since I just listed some of Mason's random sayings.  The first one was hilarious:

We were getting ready for bath time and Mason was undressing.  I was in the hall watching Alex - the crazy boy (another story) - in the bath.  He comes up to me with no pants or underwear on and has one hand behind his back.  He gives me a great big smile and says I love you!  He then gives me a one-armed hug and calls that a love hug.  I am just loving on him back - until - he brings his hand from behind his back, holding his underwear and says, "I'm sorry what I did to my new underwear."  That little stinker!  He knew I couldn't be mad after he sweet-talked me like that.

I love how he says actually - he says Alexally.  I think it is in honor of his brother.

I love how he says - I have a plan...  Countless interesting stories come after, I have a plan.

He was laying on the couch with the ipad.  It started to slowly slip off the couch.  He quickly jumped up to grab the ipad before it would fall, and he said, "Whoosh! I grabbed it with my left hook."  As if the ipad falling would have been devastating.  Do you think it is time for martial arts?

He is asking to do homework now.

And now I am drawing a blank.  I have to write these down right away.  At least I have this blog to go back to and reminisce.

Alex is babbling up a storm all of a sudden.  He seems to say Hello now.  Sounds like eh-o.  Laurence swears that he asks for Scooby Doo by name.  I haven't heard it yet, but she says he brings her over to the tv by her hand and points to it saying, "dididi doo."  He grunts the same for milk, hungry, and more.  He is becoming more fun by the day - but also into every drawer that he is not supposed to be in!  Nothing makes him more happy than rummaging through my drawer in the bathroom and pulling out random things.  Why does he want a tube of toothpaste so much?  Don't worry, I took everything dangerous out.

I am off to watch tennis now!  YEAH!!  I just love this tournament that comes every year.  It looks like the weather is going to be absolutely perfect toady.  The players are a mix of lower-ranked pro players and then a lot of up and coming teenagers, mixed with some college players.  I love how this small tournament can be somebody's breakthrough - or another's consolation prize trying to get the ranking points back up.  I will write more later.

Dank Doo

Mr. Alex is going to be a very polite little man, because his first word is officially THANK YOU!  He has been saying it all weekend, every time I give him something.  I called it official when he started handing me things and saying, "Dank Do" over and over again.  He figured it out!!!  I am so happy.

Right now he is playing with a Barrel of Monkeys right by my feet.  He loves these kinds of toys where he can just sit quietly and move them in and out of the barrel.  It makes just the right amount of noise.  He can play for 20 minutes or so without getting bored.   He is quite "chill" as Aunt Wendy would say.

The other thing he is doing all the time is closing doors.  It is quite annoying because he is constantly locking himself in rooms.  Most of the time he will just play in whatever room he just closed himself in, but this isn't always the safest thing.  I need to go get some child proofing door closers before someone's finger gets chopped.

Have I mentioned the size of Alex's feet?  They are huge!!  This weekend I retired the shoes that he has been wearing.  These are hand-me-down shoes from Mason (just like every article of clothes and every other toy he owns) that Mason wore at his second birthday.  And his feet are wide and everything about him is just solid.  I think we have a monster on our hands.  Mason was very big until about 9 months and then he started averaging out.  I predict Alex is going to be a lot bigger than Mason.

Time to start the day!  We are going back to the Art Festival (we went yesterday too) and then there is professional tennis at Red Rock this week.  YEAH!!! I am in heaven.
